Self Deceit and Faith.
by hillary_step inthis thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

I want to thank the Atheists here. I have come to realize I was wrong.
by BurnTheShips inhillary_step, nvrgnbk, superfine apostle, and others that have helped me so much.
they said i would be an atheist within two years, but my metamorphosis has happened virtually overnight.
'how many fingers, burntheships?'.

Just what were the "80 questions?"
by avishai innever having been baptized, i never got too them.
anyone have them handy?
just what did i need to know to be a dedicated dubbie?

i don't remember any of them, but i remember it was pretty standard JW stuff. if you wouldn't know it, the elders would help you to formulate the answer. i mean.. look at who's being baptized. not exactly the intellectual elite of this planet - well, not always ;)

Free will- Divine blackmail?
by nvrgnbk indivine blackmail .
free will in the theistic worldview.
when confronted with the problem of evil - i.e., why a loving god allows pain and suffering to exist - theists of the western traditions often invoke the "free will" defense, that god wanted us to be truly free and that such freedom necessitates evil; we must have the option to either choose him or reject him.

I think I am an Atheist (current JW)
by Robert7 ini am writing this group to discuss a topic that as you can imagine i really cannot discuss with too many people, at least as of now.
i am a married male jw, married to a another jw, and she's content with being a witness, and in fact, i don't want to change that if she's happy.. for a very brief history, i was baptized at 19, and have been a jw for 10 years.
fact is, i 'believed' in everything in as much as a lot of it 'made sense' and i was wrapped up in the whole thing.

apart from the kids, i pretty much share(d) your situation. my strategy was the fade - although one day you wont get around confessing to your wife, which is the hardest part of the story. prove to your wife that you're even a better husband without the watchtower and she'll eventually get over it.

2008 and still no Armagedon!!! I feel like I made an "Ass of myself"
by Witness 007 inyes sitting in pizza hut in 1991 a small band of pioneer brothers {me and friend's} debated when armagedon would come.
due to the "generations" doctrine, we calculated 2001 at the latest...then the doctrine was dropped!!!
recently the last world war 1 vetran died in australia.

i remember - exactly 10 years ago - i told a fellow brother that i don't believe this system of things would last another 5 years. fortunately that system of things indeed didn't last much longer for me.
